Bracebridge, ON – Andy Dai (Station Creek Golf Club) and Andrea Lai (St. Thomas Country Club) take home the hardware after two fantastic performances at South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club for the 2022 Ontario Peewee Boys & Girls Championship.
Dai started the round three strokes back of the lead and would find himself four strokes behind early on. However, Dai demonstrated confidence and poise in his game as he would slowly claw back and start knocking strokes off the lead. As a result, the 2021 (and now 2022) Ontario Peewee Boys Champion finished the tournament even par (144) and rightfully earned himself back-to-back championship titles. Max Li (Station Creek Golf Club) would take home the Silver Medal after finishing yesterday’s round with the tournament’s lowest round (68). Terrence Deng (Angus Glen Golf Club) claims third place, finishing today’s round 3-over (76).
In the girl’s division, Lai began her day with a 3-stroke lead and played consistent golf, holding the lead for the rest of the day. Lai posted a 75 and a 76 in rounds one and two, the lowest two scores she has ever recorded. In her very first Golf Ontario tournament, Lai deservingly claims the Peewee Girls Championship title after a terrific showing on the course. In second place, Nobelle Park (Rattlesnake Point Golf Club) put up the lowest score of the day in either division (72). Today’s performance launched Park up the leaderboard resulting in a strong Silver Medal finish. Elliana Buhagiar (Deer Creek Golf Club) would finish with back-to-back 78s for the week and claim the Bronze Medal.

Li & Lai Lead After First Round of 2022 Ontario Peewee Boys & Girls

Bracebridge, ON – Max Li (Station Creek Golf Club) and Andrea Lai (St. Thomas Country Club Ltd) lead the way in their respective divisions after round one of the 2022 Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys & Girls Championship at South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club.
Heavy rain came down throughout the day, but the wet conditions did not seem to impact the play of our competitors as the low scores poured in.
Max Li holds the lead in the boy’s division after shooting an impressive 4-under (68) on the day. Li was on fire with his putter, sinking five birdie putts and giving himself a 3-stroke lead going into the final round. In second place sits 2021 Peewee Champion Andy Dai (Station Creek Golf Club), who is in the red numbers today, shooting a 1-under (71).
In the girl’s division, Andrea Lai holds a 3-stroke lead heading into the final round after shooting a 3-over (75) today. Elliana Buhagiar (Deer Creek Golf Club) and Sophia Liu (Station Creek Golf Club) are tied for second place after the first round. Both girls shot 6-over (78) for the day and will be gunning for that top spot tomorrow.

South Muskoka C&GC to Host Ontario Peewee Championship Aug 8-9

Bracebridge, ON – From August 8th to 9th, South Muskoka Curling & Golf Club will host the 2022 Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys & Girls Championship. Golf Ontario’s youngest aspiring golfers will participate in 36 holes of stroke play competition as they try to conquer the Peewee provincial title.
“Junior golf has long been a pillar of South Muskoka C&GC. Having the opportunity to play host to the U13 provincial championship is an absolute honour for our club,” said Adam Frederick, General Manager at South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club. “South’s Robbie Robinson design offers a true test of Muskoka golf, and we look forward to seeing the camaraderie and competition from participants.”
Andy Dai (Station Creek GC) will attempt to go back-to-back in this event after taking home the Peewee Boys title last year. Dai played phenomenal golf in the previous year’s event and is hoping to do so against some new faces this year.
In the girl’s division, 2021 Silver Medalist Alexis Card (Galt Country Club) will be looking to jump up a spot on the leaderboard in this year’s event. Card finished only two strokes behind the winner in 2021 and is eyeing that top spot this time.

Matthews and Zheng crowned champions at 2016 Ontario Peewee Championship

CAMBRIDGE— It was a pair of wire-to-wire wins at the 2016 Ontario Peewee Championship, July 26 at Puslinch Lake Golf Course, as both opening-round leaders saw their advantage through to the final hole. Little Britain’s Justin Matthews and Markham’s Victoria Zheng each raised their respective trophies, as they were crowned champions.
Matthews, 12-years-old and a member at the Lindsay Golf & Country Club, entered the day with a one-shot advantage, in the Boys’ Championship, after an opening round of one-under (69). He quickly separated himself from his competitors thanks to birdies on the fifth and seventh holes to get to the turn at two-under. On the back nine, he did settle for a pair of bogeys and a double, but also knocked down two more birdies to complete the round at even par (70) and finish with a tournament total of one-under (69-70-139).
“This is probably the biggest tournament I have ever won,” said Matthews. “I had a lot of fun the past two days. My putting was probably the strongest part of my game, along with my shots off the tee and wedge play. All of that really helped me this week.”
Matthews admitted that playing with the lead was a new experience for him. “I had never had a lead heading into the final round of a tournament. I have always had to comeback from a couple strokes.”
Playing with the lead didn’t seem to affect Matthews, as he becomes just the second champion in the tournament’s young history. Behind Matthews there was a tie for the silver medal between Mississauga’s Thomas Latter and Toronto’s Alex Long at four-over (144). Latter, from Credit Valley Golf & Country Club, was three-over (73) in his opening round and followed it up with a one-over (71) in the second round. Long, from The Country Club, was even (70) after the first day and finished round two four-over (74).
In the Girls’ Championship, Zheng, 12-years-old from Station Creek Golf Club, began the round with a two-shot lead after her two-over (72) in the first round. A birdie on hole five helped her get to the turn at one-over. She went on to play the back nine three-over to end the day four-over (74) and finished the tournament at six-over (72-74-146).
“It feels good to win the Ontario Peewee Championship. I had a lot of fun playing in this event,” said Zheng. “Entering the day with the lead, I just wanted to work on keeping it and not be too greedy out there. I worked on getting in the fairways and onto the greens. Form there, my putting and chipping really helped me.”
Finishing three-shots back of Zheng and capturing the silver medal was Brampton’s Brooke Rivers. The Brampton Golf Club member began the round two-back of Zheng after an opening round of four-over (74). While she attempted to chase down the leader, it was not to be. Rivers finished the day five-over (75) to end the tournament at nine-over (74-75-149).
Rounding out the podium with the bronze medal was Oshawa’s Madelin Boyd. Boyd, from Lakeridge Links Golf Club, shot an eight-over (78) during round one and followed it up with a four-over (74) during round two to finish the tournament 12-over (78-74-152).

Blazevic and DiMarcantonio win inaugural Ontario Peewee Championship

CAMBRIDGE— The Golf Association of Ontario’s (GAO) inaugural Peewee Championship concluded on Aug. 7 from the Puslinch Lake Golf Course in Cambridge.
The championship, open to male and female players under the age of 13, began with 58 of the province’s top young players. At the end of competition, Burlington’s Peter Blazevic and Maple’s Alyssa DiMarcantonio were the first to hoist the trophies.
Things were close coming into the final round on the boys’ side with Toronto’s Nicholas Lin entering the day with the lead at one-under. However, with so many players within striking distance, it was anyone’s title to win. Lin finished the day seven-over and slipped into a tie for fifth. The best round of the day went to Blazevic, 11-years-old and a member at the Trafalgar Golf & Country Club, who finished even. That second round score, along with his opening round four-over (74), earned him the win at four-over for the tournament (74-70-144).
A trio of players all shared the silver medal at five-over. Toronto’s Beni Long finished the second round three-over (72-73-145), Windsor’s Shawn Sehra ended the day four-over (71-74-145), and Richmond Hill’s Jeffery Fang also carded a three-over final round (72-73-145).
Things were a little less dramatic on the girls’ side as DiMarcantonio, 12, from Station Creek Golf Club, entered the day with a nine-shot lead after an opening round of one-over (71). She would improve on that impressive performance during the second round with an even par (70) to win the title by 16 shots (71-70-141).
Finishing second was Pickering’s Ava Koukofikas. Koukofikas finished the opening round 13-over (83), but rebounded nicely in the second round with a four-over (74) to earn the silver (83-74-157).
Taking the bronze was Brampton’s Brooke Rivers. Rivers shot an eight-over (78) during the second round, adding to her 10-over (80) first round (80-78-158).
