Sathish Wins 2022 Ontario Junior Girls Championship

RESULTS / PHOTOS

Kingsville, ON – Spectators were in for a treat at Kingsville Golf & Country Club today for the final round of the 2022 Ontario Junior Girls Championship.

Clinching her very first Ontario tournament win, Swetha Sathish (Hidden Lake Golf Club) deservedly claims the 2022 Junior Girls Champion title after four fantastic rounds of golf this week.

Sathish demonstrated her strong composure today as she would comfortably hold her lead throughout the entire final round. With two bogeys to begin the day, Sathish did not seem bothered and would bounce back with two late birdies to finish even par (72) on the day and for the tournament (288). One of her birdies came on the 18th hole, where she would drop her tee shot within a foot of the hole to nearly hole-out to end the tournament. Players, parents, volunteers and other audience members at the 18th green erupted as the ball rolled towards the pin. Sathish tapped in the easy putt for her second birdie of the day and would welcome a massive ovation from what seemed like every individual on the course.

Team Ontario member Sarah Gallagher (Trafalgar Golf & Country Club) also had a terrific week. Gallagher finished 6-over (294) for the tournament and took home the Silver Medal after finishing even par (72) in rounds three and four. Kelly Zhao (Station Creek Golf Course) took home the Bronze Medal, finishing 8-over (296) for the week.

Golf Ontario would like to thank the players, staff, and volunteers for supporting the Ontario Junior Girls Championship. A huge thank you to Kingsville Golf & Country Club for hosting this incredible event. Szeryk captures Investors Group Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship

ELMIRA – The week at the 2017 Investors Group Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship belonged to London’s Ellie Szeryk, as the 15-year-old capped it off by claiming the title on July 7 at Elmira Golf Club.

It was never really in doubt for Szeryk, who won her second provincial title, the other being the 2016 Investors Group Junior Girls’ Spring Classic. Szeryk began the day with a nine-shot lead and was even after nine, thanks to back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. Szeryk’s start to the back nine was a little rocky, with a bogey on 10 and a double on 11, but thanks to her cushion, Szeryk was never under any threat from the field. She went on to card a four-over (74) final round bringing her tournament total to five-over (73-70-68-74-285).

After the win, Szeryk spoke about what she did well during the week. “I think my approach shots were pretty good. I kind of struggled off the tee but I managed to get up and make par or bogey at worst. I am going to work on my driver and longer irons as I go into my next tournament.”

Szeryk, who had a course record during the third round, was unaware of the feat. “I didn’t know it was the course record. I was actually trying to go even lower because I had a lot more birdie chances and was frustrated being only two-under. I just tried to shoot around even to put myself in good position for the final round.”

Earning the silver medal was Toronto’s Sarah Beqaj. Beqaj, a member of Team Ontario and the Toronto Golf Club, sat in second after the third round but the gap was too large for her to overcome. She began well with a birdie on the first hole, but made the turn at three-over. She would go on to finish the round nine-over (79) bringing her tournament total to 19-over (76-75-69-79-299).

Taking the bronze medal was Richmond Hill’s Emily Zhu. Zhu, who had a share of the lead after the opening round, finished the day two-over (72).  That moved her to 22-over (72-81-77-72-302) for the championship.

Szeryk, Beqaj and Zhu all earned the right to represent Ontario in the inter-provincial competition at the Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship, Aug. 1-4 at Camelot Golf & Country Club, in Cumberland, Ontario.

For more information, including the final leaderboard, see the tournament site at: https://gao.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/gao17/event/gao1721/index.htm

Chloe Currie wins playoff to capture 2015 Investors Group Junior Girls’ Championship

KANATA— Heading into the final round of the Golf Association of Ontario’s (GAO) Investors Group Junior Girls’ Championship, at Loch March Golf & Country Club, it looked like it was a formality and that Port Credit’s Chloe Currie would walk away with the trophy. However, Hornby’s Alexandra Naumovski had other plans.

Beginning the day, Currie, from the Mississaugua Golf & Country Club, held a six-stroke lead and Naumovski, from the Brampton Golf Club, was seven shots back. However, Currie, a member of Team Ontario, would shoot a five-over (77), opening the door for Naumovski. Naumovski finished her final round, two-under (70) and forced a playoff with the two players tied at 13-over for the tournament.

During the playoff, Currie landed her approach shot to within four-feet of the hole, while Naumovski overshot the green. That led to Currie sinking her birdie putt to survive the charge and hang on to win the Junior Girls’ Championship (75-73-76-77-301).

After the win, Currie talked about her week. “I felt good about my game, I was striking my irons well and hitting my three wood and hybrid consistently. The first round went well and then I built a big lead after the second. The third round played out normally and then today, well the front nine was interesting but I pulled it together on the back nine.”

Currie went on to talk about the late charges from her competitors. “Both Alex and Kristen played really well today. The playoff was definitely a highlight because I put it close to the hole and was able to make the birdie putt. Standing on 18 for the playoff I was nervous. I had never been in one before and I knew how close I was to winning a major tournament. It is just an honour to win because of all the great past champions. ”

While her charge fell just short, Naumovski still had a strong tournament and captured the silver medal (79-80-72-70-301). Rounding out the top three was Richmond Hill’s Kristen Wong at 16-over (78-78-74-74-304). Both Naumovski and Wong will join Currie on Team Ontario for the inter-provincial competition at the Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship, Aug. 4-7, at Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

The GAO would like to thank the host club Loch March, along with their staff and volunteers for helping to run the event. Thanks also to all of the GAO volunteers along with title sponsor Investors Group for their continued support of golf in the province. GAO Junior Girls' Championship Junior Girls' Match Play Junior Girls' Spring Classic Senior Women's Amateur Senior Women's Champion of Champions Women's Amateur Championship Women's Champion of Champions Women's Mid-Am

GAO Revamps Women’s Events for 2015

UXBRIDGE — The Golf Association of Ontario’s (GAO) 2015 season will offer a whole new look to female provincial tournaments and the changes are sure to not only increase participation but also enhance competition.

One of the first changes will be the qualifying structure for the Junior Girls’ Match Play Championship, June 29-30 at Woodington Lake Golf Club in Tottenham. Formerly, qualification and seeding took place a day before the matches began, but in 2015, that will be determined by the final results from the Investors Group Junior Girls’ Spring Classic, May 16-18 at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo.

“This change should make for a stronger match play field, add more significance to finishing positions at the Junior Spring Classic and give players early notice that they have qualified for this tournament,” said Manager of Women’s Tournaments Larry Longo.

Changes have also been made to the Women’s Champion of Champions. First, it will now be played on May 14 at Galt Country Club in Cambridge after earlier scheduling conflicts. In addition, a Senior Women’s Champion of Champions will be played simultaneously at Galt Country Club.

Similarly, the Investors Group Senior Women’s and Mid-Amateur Championships have been combined to take place together, on July 21-23 at Loyalist Country Club in Bath.

The date of the Women’s Match Play Championship has also been moved to later in the season, Aug. 4-6 at Woodington Lake. This will allow those participating in the Canadian Senior Women’s Championship and college players more availability to participate in the event.

A new Player Priority Entry Rankings List for the Investors Group Women’s Amateur Championship has been created for 2015 to allow the top 90 players to enter online and be accepted into the tournament immediately. Those outside the top 90, may enter the championship but will be put on a wait list. The status of those on the wait list will not be known until after the entry deadline, unless they move into the top 90. Once the deadline passes and, if positions are available, those still on the wait list will be moved into the championship to fill the 90-player field. Remaining players not yet accepted at that point will be championship alternates and moved into the championship if a spot becomes available. A similar list has been created for the Investors Group Junior Girls’ Championship. More information can be found on the tournament page.

Finally, the GAO is pleased to announce that the Member Day event at the Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto, June 22, will be a GAO Member Day for Women only.

With these new initiatives there even more reasons for women to get involved with GAO programming and enjoy all that golf has to offer.
