Team Canada Goes Down Fighting in Ruth Eller Cup Matches

Ootltewah, TN: In the Ninth Annual Ruth Eller Cup Matches at the spectacular Honors Course near Chattanooga, Tennessee, Team Canada was narrowly defeated by Team Tennessee 4 ½ points to 3 ½ points. Team Canada players were Lindsay Caljouw from Nanaimo, B.C., Lisa Maunu from St. Thomas, Ontario, Stephanie Simich from Mississauga, Ontario, Ashley Smith from Calgary, Alberta, and non-playing Team Captain, Susan Wickware from Pickering, Ontario.

Despite playing very well, Team Canada lost the Fourball and Foursomes matches on Day 1. Behind 4 points to 0, Team Canada needed to win all 4 singles matches on Day 2 to come out with a tie. With a look of purpose and determination, Day 2 began with Team Canada keeping all matches close on the front nine. Momentum began to build on the back nine and Team Canada went up in one match, then two, then three, and then were leading in all four matches. Three matches finished with Team Canada wins. However, some tough luck combined with good play by Team Tennessee resulted in Team Tennessee winning the 18th hole of the final match to tie the match, thus giving Team Tennessee the ½ point they needed to be victorious allowing them to retain the Cup.

Lindsay, Lisa, Stephanie, and Ashley are to be commended for their spirit and their fine play.
