Brian Jeffery Wins Ontario Senior Men's Amateur Crown
Fonthill, Ontario: Brian Jeffery of Collingwood assumed the early lead and never relinquished it to claim the 2002 Ontario Senior Amateur Championship, Presented by Baka Wireless. The 58-year-old posted a final round 74 for an even par 216 for 54 holes over the demanding Lookout Point Country Club in Fonthill.
The Blue Mountain Golf & Country Club member edge-out defending Champion - Stu Hamilton by four strokes to claim the title.
Hamilton, a resident of Mississauga, opened the tourney with a 69 and was just two shots back of Jeffery entering round two. A second round 77, coupled with Jeffery's 75 dropped Hamilton an additional two strokes back of the leader. Both golfers closed the tourney with two-over par 74's today.
Fred Silver of Lewiston, New York captured the Bronze Medallion, settling at +6 (69-79-74--222).
Lookout Point is situated along the Niagara Escarpment and thus features some demanding terrain for golfers. The course, which is home to the incomparable Marlene Streit, played to a par 72 and stretched to just over 6,300 yards for the event.
The top four competitors from this event earn the right to represent Ontario at the Canadian Senior Inter-Provincial Team Matches that are held in conjunction with the Canadian Senior Amateur Championship. Joining Jeffery and Hamilton are Jack Northey of Southampton and Patrick Suraj of Etobicoke. All four members have won the Ontario Senior Championship at one time: Northey in 1990; Suraj in 1994-95, 1999-00 and Hamilton in 2001.
As a non-resident of Ontario, Silver is not eligible to represent the province.
The Ontario Senior Amateur Championship, Presented by Baka Wireless is open to male golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by August 19, 2002.
The Golf Association of Ontario is the governing body for amateur golf in the province and mandates policies on behalf of over 500 member clubs and 100,000 individual members. The GAO conducts provincial championships, camps, clinics and seminars.
