MARY ANN LAPOINTE WINS 8TH ONTARIO LADIES MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Kincardine, Ontario: Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown captured her eighth Ontario Ladies Mid-Amateur title today after firing a two-under par 70 during today's final round at Ainsdale Golf Club in Kincardine.
Lapointe, a native of Lachine, Quebec trailed Terril Samuel of Etobicoke by three strokes entering today's final round of the 54 hole, stroke play event. Samuel, whose golfing resume rivals that of Lapointe's, posted a three-over 75 today to finish two shots back in second spot.
The North Halton Golf & Country Club member now owns 16 Provincial Championships including five Ontario Amateurs and three Quebec Amateur victories.
Yesterday, Samuel claimed Low Net honours with a two-day net score of 146. As well as having won this event in 2000, Samuel has also captured two Quebec Amateurs (1987-88) and one Ontario Amateur (1991).
The Ladies' Mid-Amateur Championship is open to female amateur golfers 25 years of age or older.
Susan Wickware of Pickering posted consecutive rounds of 77 to wind up with sole possession of third place, twenty shots back of Lapointe.
Stephanie Packer and Ivy Steinburg round out the top five having toured the 54 hole event in 239 strokes (+23).
The Golf Association of Ontario is the governing body for amateur golf in the province and mandates policies on behalf of over 500 member clubs and 100,000 individual members. The GAO conducts provincial championships, camps, clinics and seminars.
