LEON TAMES FIELD TO WIN ONTARIO JUNIOR BOYS MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Kitchener, Ontario: 15-year-old Matthew Leon of Brampton emerged victorious at the Ontario Junior Boys Match Play Championship, Presented by The Toronto Sun after a gruelling week of competition. Leon, the tournament's 47th seed, defeated Robbie Greenwell of Georgetown 2up in the 18 hole final today at Westmount Golf & Country Club.
The match play format, featuring 64 of Ontario's brightest young golfers began Tuesday and was supposed to include rounds two and three on Wednesday. After inclement weather forced the suspension of day two, tournament organizers were forced to condense the event over three days. Leon and Greenwell, 16, ultimately played six rounds of golf in just three days. Many of the players including both finalists are off to Saskatoon tomorrow to begin preparations for the Canadian Junior Championship.
Leon earned a berth to the final by way of a quarterfinal decision over Andrew McCormack of Orillia and then 1up victory over 15-year-old Brad Revell of Kingston.
Greenwell, seeded #25 ousted Mark Vanderbeek 3&2 in the quarterfinals. The 1999 Ontario Bantam Champion then outduelled Donald Bryson of Brantford 3&1 in the semis.
The Golf Association of Ontario is the governing body for amateur golf in the province and mandates policies on behalf of over 500 member clubs and 100,000 individual members. The GAO conducts provincial championships, camps, clinics and seminars.
