GLORIA-OUS ENDING FOR SINCLAIR AT
ONTARIO SENIOR LADIES AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Corbyville, Ontario: Gloria Sinclair of Georgetown won the Ontario Senior Ladies' Amateur Championship after defeating Mary Lou Henderson of Essex on the first playoff hole at the Trillium Wood Golf Club just outside Belleville.

Ultimately, Sinclair would lead the event for all three rounds, but Henderson managed to draw even during today's final stanza. The pair finished tied at 238 (+22) for 54 holes. A sudden-victory playoff was needed to break the tie. After watching Sinclair par the first extra hole, Henderson needed a par of her own to extend the match. A bogey five, on Trillium Wood's first hole sealed the Kingsville Golf & Country Club member's fate.

Meanwhile, Sophie Fenton of Clifford continued her climb atop the standings, eventually settling in third place. The Pike Lake Golf Club member opened the tourney with an 88, but managed to rebound with a pair of 76's that earned her a spot on Ontario's Inter-Provincial Team.

Rounding out the province's four person delegation to the National Championship is Marlane Robertson of Dundas. Robertson closed with an inspired 77 on day three. Judith Morrison of Uxbridge is the team's alternate.

Trillium Wood Golf Club and the ever-changing weather conditions in the Quinte region proved to be a stern test for Ontario's finest senior amateur golfers this week. Many in the field of 80 golfers struggled to break 80. The golf course played to a par 72 and stretched to nearly 5,700 yards.

The field of 80 golfers was cut to the low 54 players after yesterday's second round. 55 competitors survived to play an additional 18 holes today.

The Golf Association of Ontario is the governing body for amateur golf in the province and mandates policies on behalf of over 500 member clubs and 100,000 individual members. The GAO conducts provincial championships, camps, clinics and seminars.
