Chris Markle Wins Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur Title

Peterborough, Ontario: Chris Markle overcame a six-shot deficit to claim the 2002 Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur Championship, Presented by KPMG. The Cobourg native carded a final round 69 to win by two shots over three other golfers. Mr. Markle's score of two-under proved to be the only sub-par round of the tournament held at the Kawartha Golf & Country Club.

The 54-hole Championship was shortened to 36 holes after snow and rain forced the cancellation of 18 holes. As a result of the scheduling changes, play in today's final round began on both the 1st and 10th holes.

Championship Pose: Chris Markle

Ironically, Markle, who was six shots in arrears of First Round leader Kelly Roberts of London, played in one of two final round pairings. "I was in the final group, on the last day of the tournament," joked Markle. "Unfortunately, it was the wrong group. I didn't know what was going on when the tournament ended," an elated Markle explained.

The 'feature' group which included Roberts, received much of the attention as the event seemingly was about to conclude with Roberts standing over a key putt on the 18th hole. Moreover, Paul Davis, a past champion of this event, was anticipating a three-way play-off and was tuning up on the range.

"I hit the ball really well today, my strong suit is definitely my driving, when that is working for me good things usually follow," remarked Markle.

Mr. Markle is employed at Collins & Aikman as a Mould Repairman. He plays out of the Dalewood Golf & Curling Club just north of Port Hope, a club that includes former GAO Champions such as Brad Pemberton and Cuyler Hedley.

The top four competitors will comprise Ontario's team at the 2002 Canadian Inter-Provincial Team Matches later this summer in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Roberts, Tim Lane, of London and Davis of Toronto tied for second place at 150 and will join Markle on Team Ontario. Tony Ravenda of Welland and Bernie Bodogh of Grimsby tied for fifth at 152.

The Golf Association of Ontario is the governing body for amateur golf in the province and mandates policies on behalf of over 500 member clubs and 100,000 individual members. The GAO conducts provincial championships, camps, clinics and seminars.
