David Greenaway Wins Ontario Public Players Championship

David Greenaway of Barrie held off a late charge by Craig Loughry to capture the 2003 Ontario Public Players Championship at the Mill Run Golf & Country Club in Uxbridge, Ontario.

Greenaway carded a 2-over par, 74, good enough for a 1-stroke victory over Loughry, a two-time champion of this event. "It looked like Craig was going to take control of the tourney but I was able to hang on by my finger nails," said the 42-year-old.

"Both Craig and Ryan were probably getting annoyed with me,"joked Greenaway. "While they were sticking their approach shots close to the pin I was settling over 20-footers and draining them; my putter definitely kept me in the game."

Greenaway began final round play tied with Scarborough native - Ryan Williams at 3-under 69, two shots ahead of Loughry who opened with a 71 yesterday. Loughry played the outward nine in 35 strokes while Williams made the turn at 37 shots to drop into a tie with the Courtice, Ontario resident.

While Williams was faltering, Greenaway toured the front nine in only 33 shots and in so doing, increase his lead over Loughry to four shots. Williams carded an 8-over par 80 to drop to 5th place. "It was one of those front nines, I could've been 30 or 31," revealed Greenaway. "I missed two or three six footers for birdie."

"He played great on the front nine," commented Loughry of Greenaway. "Once we made the turn I knew I had to press him a little; although I wasn't able to make any birdies on the back nine, Dave made a few errors to draw me closer."

Greenaway, a Corporate Accommadations Specialist, began the inward nine with two bogeys and a double-bogey on holes 10-through-13. Loughry's inability to make birdies on the home-stretch resulted in a one-stroke victory for the native of Markham, Ontario.

Ted Acton of Hamilton turned in rounds of 75-74-149 to easily capture the B-Flight of the annual championship that gathers the province's top public course players. Acton's 5-over par performance placed him in a tie for 5th place overall.

In the C-Flight, Scott Coughlin of Guelph, defeated Michael Naccarato of Toronto in a playoff to win the division for golfers with handicap factors of 12 or greater. Both Coughlin and Naccarato posted impressive scores of 78 and 76, respectively during today's second and final round.

Tomorrow, Loughry will be caddying for friend and Canadian Tour Professional - Jon Mills of Brooklin at the Canadian Open. Mills recently locked up the Order of Merit on the Canadian Tour with earnings in excess of $55,000. The Canadian Open features a host of top Ontario talent including:

Mike Weir (1988 Ontario Junior Champion; 1990, 1992 Ontario Amateur Champion)

Ian Leggatt (1988 Ontario Match Play Champion)
David Morland (1986 Ontario Junior Champion)
