There's Something About Mary Ann
-Georgetown's Mary Ann Lapointe Wins 10th Mid-Amateur Championship-

Mary Ann Lapointe cruised to a five shot victory and in so doing captured her tenth Ontario Ladies Mid-Amateur Golf Championship at the Sarnia Golf & Curling Club.

The 43-year-old mother of two from Georgetown, Ontario carded a final round 1-under par 71 and finished the three day event at -2 (71-72-71--214). "I played pretty darn close to a perfect round of golf today," said Lapointe. "I was fortunate to make a birdie on the first hole which set the tone for the day."

Lapointe, a graduate of Florida International University led the championship from start to finish. The North Halton Golf & Country Club member joins Marlene Streit and Nick Weslock as the only three golfers to have won 10 or more Ontario provincial championships. Streit has compiled an amazing 11 Ontario Amateur titles while fellow Ontario and Canadian Golf Hall of Famer - Weslock, captured the Ontario Senior Amateur 11 times in a span of 13 years. "I wasn't aware of that stat, that's good company," exclaimed Lapointe.

Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Ontario, a two-time winner of this event, finished second to Lapointe for the second straight year. The Weston Golf & Country Club member and 2003 Ontario Ladies Match Play Champion posted scores of 72-74-73--219 (+3) to finish five strokes in arrears of the winner.

Cheryll Damphouse of Amherstburg, Ontario made a final round push, shooting 75 on day three to eke out a third place finish. The Kingsville Golf & Country Club member ended the tourney at 12-over (75-78-75--228).

The Ontario Ladies' Mid-Amateur Championship is open to golfers 25 years of age and over. The field of 76 golfers was pared to 54 and ties for today's final round. 56 players survived the 36 hole cut including Sylvie Van Molle of Toronto. The St. George's Golf & Country Club member recently emigrated to Canada from her native Belgium. The 39-year-old is a former Belgium Ladies' Mid-Amateur Champion. Van Molle placed 14th after rounds of 85-80-78--243.

Lapointe's three-stroke lead entering the final round increased to four after a birdie on the opening hole. "I was never really threatened today," said Lapointe who played with Samuel and Judith Allan-Kyrinis of Thornhill. "I was swinging well all day and after Terrill bogeyed the fifth hole I felt pretty good about my chances." The five-time Ontario Amateur Champion increased her lead to 8 shots after their group made the turn for the inward nine.

Next week, Lapointe and four other Ontario golfers will attempt to qualify for the United States Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. "I'm looking forward to playing in it again," said Lapointe. "I've played in it twice before and was Medallist once, but lost my second round match." The 2003 U.S. Women's Mid-Am is being played at the Long Cove Golf Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina from October 11-16, 2003.
