Marlene Streit Is A Winner Again!
Canada's Finest Female Golfer Captures Ontario Senior Ladies Title
Dalewood Golf & Curling Club in Port Hope was the setting for Marlene Streit's latest triumph - her sixth Ontario Senior Ladies' Amateur Golf Championship.
Streit, a resident of Unionville, carded a final round 78, good enough for a three shot margin of victory over Mary Lou Henderson of Kingsville. After assuming the second round lead, Streit was confident that she could just "go out and play the scorecard." The 69-year-old, who maintains a home in Florida during the winter months, finished the 54-hole event at 10-over par (76-72-78--226).
Her win this week comes after a five year hiatus from competitive golf in Ontario. "I just felt like taking some time off, I've still played competitively in Florida," said Streit, a member at the York Downs Golf & Country Club. "It feels great (to win), I just love to play."
Henderson, who plays out of the Kingsville Golf & Country Club, fired a final round 74 to sneak into sole possession of second place. The 57-year-old began the tourney with a disappointing 80 and then rebouned with rounds of 75 and 74 for a three-day total of 229 (+13).
Riding a wave of success of late, Susan Wickware of Pickering also carded a final round 74 to capture the bronze medal and finish just four shots back of winner. Wickware, 53, finished 5th at the recently completed Ontario Ladies' Amateur at Whitevale Golf Club.
Defending champion - Gloria Sinclair of Georgetown posted a disappointing final round 86 and finished in 10th place. The North Halton Golf & Country Club member carded back-to-back 79's on days one and two.
Streit has now won an amazing 19 Ontario provincial championships. Of her more than 35 significatn amateur victories throughout the world, she lists the 1956 U.S. Women's Amateur, 1953 British Women's Amateur and 1951 Canadian Ladies' Amateur as her three most memorable victories.
Streit credits her win this week to consistent putting. "I made a lot of putts during the first two rounds, but today was a little different. I missed a few, there were some tough pin positions." noted Streit.
Much has been written about Streit's secret weapon - her 50-year-old putter she 'borrowed' from Gord McInnis Sr. her mentor and former Head Professional at the Lookout Point Country Club where she developed her other-worldly golfing skills. "I'm still using it, I use it at mostly all the championships I play in," said Streit.
In all her travels, the 11-time Ontario Amateur champion had never toured the understated, yet demanding Dalewood course. "The greens here are wonderful and very big, and I was very impressed with the layout," a complimentary Streit revealed.
Team Ontario, which is traditionally comprised of the top four competitors from the Senior Amateur will include Mary Lou Henderson, Mary Kraus of Markham, Jeanne Beaith of Port Hope, Susan Wickware of Pickering and Alternate Carolyn Smith of Creemore. Streit graciously declined a position on the team stating, "I've been fortunate to have represented Ontario and Canada many times in the past, I'd like to give an opportunity to some of the other ladies."
The Canadian Inter-Provincial Team Championships are run concurrently with the Canadian Senior Ladies' Amateur Championship, which are being contested at the Galt Country Club in Cambridge from August 25-28.

- 9-time Canadian Ladies' Amateur (Close) Champion (1951-57, 1963, 1968)
- 4-time Canadian Senior Ladies' Amateur Champion (1985, 1987-88, 1993)
- British Ladies' Amateur Champion (1953)
- United States Women's Amateur Champion (1953)
- Australian Women's Amateur Champion (1956)
- United States Senior Women's Amateur Champion (1985, 1994)
Born in Cereal, Alberta in 1934, Streit moved to the Niagara Peninsula as a young girl. She is a member of the Ontario and Canadian Golf Halls of Fame; Canada's Sports
Hall of Fame; she is a four-time Canadian Female Athlete of the Year and a two-time Lou Marsh Trophy Winner as Canada's Athlete of the Year (male or female).
