Thriller of a Win for Michael Jackson at Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur Championship
Michael Jackson of Collingwood overcame a five shot deficit to win the Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur Championship, Presented by KPMG at the Mad River Golf Club in Creemore.
Jackson utilized a patient approach and an intimate knowledge of the demanding Mad River golf course during today's final round. "When I looked out my window this morning and noticed how windy it was, I felt pretty good about my chances," admitted Jackson. "I generally have a low-ball flight and I was able to avoid any serious trouble out there."

Jackson, and Mad River's Director of Golf - Brian French are close friends and often play together at the Collingwood area course. "We grew up together and I've played here quite a bit in the past - I definitely know where to and where not to hit the ball on this course," said Jackson.
The 50-year-old father of two got progessively better as the tournament went on. After an opening round 77, Jackson was in a tie for 6th entering round two. Moving day proved to be of little consequence as the General Motors dealer fired a 4-over 76 and crept into a tie for 4th trailing Jeff Van Vliet of Dorchester by five shots heading into today's final round. A final round 75 that included six bogeys and three birdies proved to be enough to overtake Van Vliet and claim the title.
"Frenchy (Brian French) approached me as I walking off the 15th hole and asked me if I wanted to know what was happening with the lead group behind me - I told him I didn't want to know," a focussed Jackson revealed as he was clipping along at 1-over par after 15 holes.
What was happening behind him was the unravelling of the leaders. First round leader - Scott Disney of London struggled throughout the day, posting seven bogeys including doubles on holes 7, 12 and 16. Ron Pearson entered the final round four shots back of Van Vliet. The 39-year-old native of Kitchener bogeyed 12, 14 and 18 and took a double on 15 and eventually finished two short of the leader. Van Vliet was seemingly in control of his own destiny, playing the first 12 holes at 3-over par. A double bogey on 13 and then a disastrous quintuple bogey on the par 3, 16th dashed any hopes of a win for the Pine Knot G&CC member. Not quite out of the running yet, the determined 46-year-old rebounded with a birdie on the difficult par 5, 17th and a par on the final hole to end up just one-shot back of Jackson.
"That was the tournament right there, those two holes," recalled Van Vliet. "But what can you do, it was an experience."
Although the championship was open for the first time to golfers aged 35 and over, the selection for Ontario's Inter-Provincial Team will be comprised of the top four players aged 40 and over. As a result, Jackson, Van Vliet, Mark Brewer of Pickering and Jim Briggs of Fenwick will represent the province at the Canadian Inter-Provincial Team Championship later this summer. This event is run concurrently with the opening two rounds of the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship.
Briggs and Craig Domville of Toronto each turned in a stirling final round 74, for the low score of the day. Domville, also known for his competence in the culinary arts was masterful in today's gale-like conditions. A double-bogey 6, as a result of a four-putt on the 9th hole proved to be one of the only blemishes on an otherwise clean card for Domville.
Daniel Legros of Oshawa made a hole-in-one on the par three, 7th hole from 125 yards. The 38-year-old shot 83 and wound up in a tie for 44th.
