Dave Bunker Wins Ontario Match Play Championship

Dave Bunker of Woodbridge needed all 36 holes of the final at the Ontario Match Play Championship, Presented by ClubLink to defeat Kevin Bryce of Mississauga 1up at the Lake Joseph Golf Club in Port Carling, Ontario.

The 38-year-old Bunker outduelled his 18-year-old opponent in a match that could have gone either way. "It wasn't easy, I'm just happy and relieved that it's all over," said Bunker. "Kevin played so well, the entire match was close until the end."

Bunker, who is a Middle School Teacher with Toronto District School Board emerged from the grueling week with his first Provincial Championship. The Ontario Match Play is one of two major titles that the province's top amateurs strive for each season. Past Champions include PGA Tour Pro - Ian Leggatt and 2002 Canadian Tour Rookie of the Year - David Hearn.

In 2002, Bunker lost his third round match to Nicholas Kenney 2&1 at the Match Play and tied for 14th at the Ontario Amateur with rounds of 74-75-80-72--301.

"I won the Father & Daughter Low Net gold medal with my daughter Kristine and a silver medal with my daughter Sandra," joked Bunker, "but this is a big win." As well as having won in the GAO's Family Classic, Bunker has also captured Club Championships while he was a member at Blairhampton Golf Club in Norland, Ontario and Toronto's Humber Valley Golf Club. Bunker is now a member of the GAO's Public Player Program.

Bunker is a graduate of the University of Toronto's Physical Education program and it's Faculty of Education program. While at UofT, Bunker was a member of the Varsity Golf Team for two years.
