GAHIR, DORE PREVAIL AT INVESTORS GROUP
ONTARIO JUNIOR TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

Uxbridge, Ontario: Playoffs were needed to determine a winner in both the Junior Boys and Girls Divisions of the Investors Group Ontario Junior Tournament of Champions at the Wooden Sticks Golf Club. Both Anita Gahir of Thornhill and Kevin Dore of Dundas made birdies on their first playoff holes to win their respective titles.

Dore, 17, and Kyle Simmons of Toronto tied at 225 (+9) in the three round event, while Gahir, 15 and Megan Chapman of Collingwood were deadlocked at 238 (+22) after 54 holes.

Although Simmons, 16, narrowly missed out on the Overall title, the Station Creek Golf Club member managed to wrestle the Juvenile Championship from the 20 other competitors in the 14-16 age bracket.

In a bizarre moment on the 17th hole, Holly Goncalves of London, who led the Junior Girls Division after both the first and second rounds, withdrew from the event after running out of golf balls. The 17-year-old had been struggling from the outset and when two errand tee-shots found the pond on the 17th hole she realized she couldn't continue. Decision 5-1/5 states that a competitor is allowed to borrow balls from others to complete the round, Goncalves decided otherwise and withdrew.

Rounding out the top three in the Junior Boys Division were Kyler Murphy of Thunder Bay and Craig Revell of Kingston, they finished one-shot back of the leaders.

Dore, a member at the Dundas Valley Golf & Country Club, will be competing in the prestigious Thunderbird Invitational in Arizona next week. This AJGA event is arguably the best junior golfing event in the world. Dore captured two AJGA titles last year and is also the 2001 Ontario Juvenile Champion.
