London District Sweeps Grey Power Classic

Orillia, ON: It was a great day for the London District as they claimed both the Men’s and Women’s Division titles at the 2004 Grey Power Classic. The provincial championship was held at Hawk Ridge Golf Club in Orillia and featured 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams participating in each division. Each team represented a different geographical district in Ontario.

In the Men’s division, Durant D’Intino and Larry Kummer combined for a net score of 58 and defeated the teams from York District and Kingston District by two and four strokes respectively.

Although enthused with their victory, the players were even more impressed with the overall experience of the tournament.

“It was run as a first class tournament that made two seniors feel like pros when there name was announced on the first tee,” exclaimed Mr. Kummer. “We never took anything for granted when we were playing and tried to stay focused on the moment of playing our best each hole. The other team we played with were two fine getlemen and played well too.”

Meanwhile in the women’s division things were much tighter with three teams going into a play-off to decide the champion. The team representing the Niagara District was eliminated on the first play-off hole, leaving the team from London to battle against the Scarboro Women. They played two more holes before the team of Phyllis Broadhead and Metta Hunking won with a three foot putt by Broadhead.

“It was such a wonderful experience, but I was quite nervous during the playoff,” admitted Mrs. Broadheard. “Particularly on the third playoff hole when I had to sink that putt to win”.

Teams were paired with twosomes from a different district and most golfers said that meeting golfers from different parts of the province was the best part of their day. The prizes definitely added to the appeal as well: both winning teams received vouchers for a weekend for two at Taboo Resort in the Muskokas that included accommodations and golf. The second place teams each received a set of brand new Ben Hogan irons and the third place finishers each received a brand new Ben Hogan putter. Also, each team that qualified for the provincial championship received a beautiful pewter plaque signifying their achievement.

This was the second year of the Grey Power Classic, which began last year at Tangle Creek Golf Club in Barrie. This year’s event saw increased participation as the word spreads of the event which only costs $20 per team with half of the entry fees donated to the Ontario Arthritis Society. Tournament organizers hope to increase participation in 2005.

“It’s such an exciting event and because of the low cost of entry it’s very feasible to enter,” stated Grey Power Insurance President, Ron Griffiths. “With half the proceeds going to such a great cause like the Ontario Arthritis Society, we can only hope that word continues to spread and participation increases each year.”
