London native winning on and off the golf course
Mount Forest, Ontario: John Webster of London captured the 12th Investors Group Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur Golf Championship today after posting his third straight solid round of golf at the Pike Lake Golf & Country Club in Mount Forest, Ontario.
The victory today marks the first major win for the London Hunt & Country Club member. Webster joked about having won a Juvenile event on the Tyson Tour at the Ingersoll G&CC over 30 years ago but the most important victory is one that the 48-year-old is currently undertaking. In 1999, Webster was diagnosed with a type of cancer known as lymphoma and although the cancer is not yet in remission, he claims to be in good spirits and "feeling really good."

The corporate golf travel specialist fought back the tears as he was addressing the gathering during the prize presentations. "Gosh, this is such a wonderful game, it's (golf) the only thing that has kept me sane," remarked Webster. "I really can't believe it!"
Webster entered final round play trailing Ron Pearson of Kitchener and Chris Markle of Cobourg by a single shot. As the leaders and others close to the lead struggled during today's windswept final stanza, Webster managed to post a 1-over par 73, good enough for a three shot margin of victory. Webster shot 70-72-73--215 (-1) in the 54-hole championship.
"I was playing well,'' Webster said. "To be honest, I was rather anxious. I swung the club well all day and I never got quick and that's my nemesis.'' Webster is the second London golfer to win the Mid-Amateur. Kelly Roberts of The Oaks won it in 1997. Roberts finished in a tie for eighth place this time shooting 74-72-75 for 221.
A strong club player at London Hunt, Webster also won the club championship twice in Philadelphia at the Gulph Mills Golf Club (he lived in Philadelphia from 1980-2000 and returned to the London area he calls home for treatment of his cancer). "I was in a pretty competitive golf market in Philadelphia,'' he said. "I finished in the Top-10 in the state a couple of times.''
Second round co-leaders - Pearson and Markle struggled to sustain the success they enjoyed during the first two rounds of the championship. Pearson finished with a 78 while Markle did one better to claim sole possession of second place.
Pickering's Mark Brewer fired a 6-under 66 today, equalling the low round of the tournament established by Pearson during yesterday's second round. The Whitevale Golf Club member posted six birdies and an eagle which came on the par four, 325 yard, 14th hole. Brewer made the biggest move of the day, jumping 33 spots to finish in a four-way tie for third.
John Robinson of Thorndale and John Simpson of Oshawa joined Brewer and Pearson in third place.
The 2004 Investors Group Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur Championship was open to all male amateur golfers who had reached their 35th birthday on or before May 3, 2004 and who had a valid RCGA/GAO Handicap Factor not exceeding 8.4.
The championship was a 54-hole, stroke play event, featuring 144 golfers. The low 60 players and ties following 36-holes play advanced to today's final round.
Although the Ontario championship is open to competitors aged 35 and over, the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship only admits golfers who have reached 40 years of age and have qualified via their respective provincial championships. As a result, Ontario's Inter-Provincial Team is comprised of the top four competitors, 40 years of age or over.
35-year-old Simpson was thus ineligible to compete on Team Ontario and a play-off was held to determine the final two spots on the four-man squad. Brewer and Robinson made birdies on the 1st play-off hole to eliminate Pearson who managed but a par.
